Anglo fatality

(Jun 14, 2017)

An employee has been fatally injured in a loader-related incident at Anglo American Platinum’s (JSE:AMS) Dishaba mine in South Africa.

CEO Chris Griffith announced the June 7 fatality yesterday, extending condolences and saying the company wanted to learn from the incident at the Amandelbult mine complex.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life,” he said.

“Safety is our highest priority and an independent and comprehensive process is underway to understand the circumstances and ensure we learn from this incident.”

The company reported a fatality from a fall of ground-related incident its Tumela operations in April.

The looming dispute threatens to prolong uncertainty and further slow spending in South Africa’s biggest export industry, the wire service noted.

Seven fatalities occurred at Anglo American Platinum’s own mines in 2016, a sharp increase on the two fatalities in 2015 and three the year prior, according to its annual report.
